Maths
The Mathematics Department aims to provide a quality experience for all students, whatever their ability.
Lessons are designed to equip students so that they are well prepared for the workplace of tomorrow, the introduction of more functional skills based work will underpin this strategy. In both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 all students are set according to ability so that the education they receive is at the correct level and so that their understanding is maximised. Basic Numeracy is a key factor in all Mathematics lessons and this area is constantly revisited throughout the time students spend in the department, it is these basic skills that enable our students to make better progress as they grow through the Academy.
In Key Stage 4 most students study for the AQA Modular B course, this has been designed to make best use of the opportunities for many to achieve a grade C or better. In a small number of cases we still use the Linear qualification for students whose needs suit this approach better.
Sixth form students will also follow a modular course but this time with EDEXCEL. This course is used by Adam's Grammar and the Academy team is working with Adam's to ensure that a quality experience is available to our year 12 and 13 students. Students are able to have some choice in the modules they undertake, all must complete the core modules but choices form Applied/Mechanics, Statistics and Decision Maths are available. In all 6 modules must be completed for a full A level qualification.
Current activities include involving students in the University of Leeds Mathematics Challenges, for which there are three levels, Senior, Intermediate and Junior. Our students have been very successful at these in the past. We also work with the University of Chester where out students have been invited to attend a 'Mathsmagic' day, this is a day of fun and educational Mathematics activities.'
